Jazzmo’thology @ Prince of Peckham returns to SE15 on Friday 31 August with a superfine ensemble to continue the vibe created at last month’s successful launch by the phenomenal guitarist Tony Rémy and his band.
The roof is set to be blown off once again in Peckham when piano maestro Jean-Phillipe Dary takes to the stage to première the ‘African Avant Garde’ project, accompanied by Special Guest Steve Williamson on saxophone who is making a welcome, much-anticipated return to the London scene. Introducing the evening’s musical entertainment will be the wonderful young singer Amelia Hope and her 4-Tet.
J-PhY, as he is popularly known at home in France, explains the fundamentals of ‘African Avant Garde’: ‘The idea is to mix rhythms from Africa, for example Afro-Beat and Mbalax, with Reggae, Dancehall, Dub, Electro etc., and the Free Jazz concept. I mean the art of improv. and the freedom of instant writing. I play keys, piano, bass synth, sing …. I have some loops and some modal harmonics already prepared. Steve plays saxophone distinctively and we have so much in common as players. But the interesting thing will be the ‘Momentum of the Moment’!
J-PhY, Steve Williamson and Amelia Hope! A scintillating combination of talent on the last Friday in August – upstairs at the Prince of Peckham!
