Fat Lib London Film Club: Heavyweights (Monday 15th July 2024)
We’re really excited to announce that for our summer edition of the Fat Lib London Film Club, we’re screening Heavyweights (1995)!
About the film
Gerry (Aaron Schwartz) is not looking forward to his summer vacation, since he’ll be spending it at a camp for overweight boys in order to shed pounds. Fortunately, a kindly couple, the Bushkins (Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara), run the camp and make the process fun and relaxed. However, they’re soon forced to declare bankruptcy and sell the camp to Tony Perkis (Ben Stiller), a fitness fanatic who turns the camp into a living nightmare of over-the-top training. But the kids plan to fight back.
Join us for a truly healing film experience, as we watch some plus size classics and dissect fat representation on-screen, with the added addition of some truly banging Jamaican food from White Men Can’t Jerk available too.
Schedule
19.00 – 19.30 – arrival, mingling, grab your food and drinks
19.30 – Heavyweights screening
21.15 – Discussion, group ratings and post-screening social
Location – “The Music Room” at The Prince of Peckham pub (please note the room is up one set of stairs).
Who is the event for? This event is perfect for anyone who loves a good comedy and is passionate about fat liberation. Grab some popcorn (or a jerk burger), a drink, and settle in for a fun evening with fellow fat positive movie enthusiasts. See you there!
Allies are welcome at our film club, we encourage them to partake, learn from and add to our discussions.
Tickets cost £5 each (plus admin fee) Most of our events are completely free, but unfortunately there is a cost to screen films, so we have to ask for this small amount to cover our costs. However, do let us know if you would like to come and cannot afford to, and we can try to work something out. You can message us at @fatliblondon on Instagram 🙂
