Black History Walks runs walks, talks, films, river cruises, helicopter and steam train tours on London’s Black history. All of our speakers hold doctorates, are Phd students or authors.
How to deal with racist shops and institutions
The Rye Lane Campaign (RLC), 2012 is a pivotal point in Peckham’s history which marked a period of solidarity by Peckham’s African community. Tired of persistent abuse by racist shopkeepers on Rye Lane, the community ‘rose up’ in numbers to defend their consumer rights and challenge the discrimination meted out the shopkeepers and the London Metropolitan Police force.
The Rye Lane Campaign is an incredible account of survival in a racially charged area and links to past events of a similar nature.
The interactive presentation by Dr Charmaine Brown (Rye Lane Campaign mum), is illustrated by archival materials from the campaign and will address the following:
catalyst which erupted into an organic campaign
organisation behind the campaign
6-week physical protest
conclusion of the physical protest
impact on the family and community
The public apology to the affected family and community is captured in a YouTube vlog. The establishment of the Rye Lane Charter (on consumer rights) ratified by the London Borough of Southwark is a tangible outcome from the campaign demonstrating the power of the community championing consumer rights.
